A WORD FROM SETH:

Upon arriving in Central NY, I started researching the local music education scene, and the first thing I noticed was that there are very few actual BASS PLAYERS teaching students about bass playing.

Everywhere I look, I see ads for “Guitar Lessons (electric, acoustic, and bass)” or “Guitar AND bass lessons”.
This almost always means that a guitar player has decided to try and make more money by offering lessons on an instrument they can “get by” on, but really don’t know how to PLAY appropriately.

A bass guitar is NOT just a low-tuned guitar with two strings missing, and the bass and guitar have completely different functions in a band.  The philosophies of the two instruments are completely different as well...  the longer an aspiring bassist studies with a guitar player, the more they will have to “unlearn” and fix when they finally get around to studying with someone who approaches the instrument from a bassist’s perspective.

I don’t play the guitar.  I play the bass, and I’ve found that it’s capable of sound and expression some guitarists couldn’t imagine.

If anyone out there is interested, I’d love the chance to show you what I mean.

Best wishes,

Seth Horan
